fair weather fan
I'm a fan of fair weather, and weather for the fair was very fair indeed, but Waukesha County Fair wasn't the only event benefiting from light breezes, sunny skies and mild temps. Out of a possible four launch opportunities for balloons during the Waterford Hot Air Balloon Festival they flew four times, and balloons don't usually launch unless the weather is really nice.
I crewed the three times I traveled to Waterford, driving the chase vehicle.
Sharing the narrow roads with so many other chasers and radio waves with so many other pilots and crew all talking at once... Finding a way to get back to where they landed when it seemed there's nothing but planted fields along both sides of what few roads there were... Meeting a 90 yr old WWII vet and farmer who spent his entire life on that corner of God's country, and allowed us to drive on his alfalfa to pick up several balloons... Uncle Harry's frozen custard... Hearing for the first time guitar virtuoso and singer Macyn Taylor, who briefly played for us before Saturday evening's launch...
The 2nd annual festival drew a good crowd and was bigger and better than last year. I expect that trend to continue. I learned Saturday that Hartford is no longer hosting the balloons, so at only 25 miles away Waterford will be the best opportunity, though Wings Over Waukesha will have a few balloons.
