The Capitol Connection

A fifth-generation Wisconsinite, Dave grew up in a family business, seeing firsthand the barriers to success big government places in front of small business. Hired out of college as an aide to Congressman Paul Ryan, Dave worked the next nine years helping Ryan advance the cause of limited government and the free enterprise system - while also holding a job in the private sector. Elected to represent the 83rd Assembly District in a special election in May of 2011, Dave has fought alongside Governor Walker to put Wisconsin's economy back on track, balancing the budget for the first time in over a decade, enacting concealed carry legislation and helping lead the fight against ObamaCare in Wisconsin. Before his election, Dave also served in various leadership positions in his church and also served on the Village of Big Bend Board of Trustees. In his free time, Dave enjoys spending time with his family, hunting and bowfishing. Dave and his wife, Amy, make their home in the Town of Vernon with their five children.

Greetings from the 83rd!

Welcome to my new NOW blog, The Capitol Connection. While Madison can sometimes feel like worlds away for residents of the 83rd District, it is my hope that this will serve as another tool to keep you updated and in touch with your state government. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or comments on how I can make this blog better serve you. To reach me, please visit my official Assembly website for my phone and email information, as well as district boundaries for the 83rd Assembly District (http://legis.wisconsin.gov/assembly/craig/).

Now to the Capitol Connection. Last Monday, the 101st Wisconsin Legislature was sworn in and we have already seen a lot of activity in the Capitol. This past Tuesday, Governor Walker gave his State of the State Address where he once again committed to helping grow our economy, creating jobs and reducing the tax burden on the middle class. (My response to both the Inaugural and the Governor’s State of the State Address can be found on my website.) We also saw the introduction of Mining Legislation – which I have co-sponsored – that would allow iron ore mining in Wisconsin by streamlining the current approval process while still maintaining the safeguards necessary to ensure that we protect the environment for our children and our grandchildren.

With the Governor’s Budget Address likely to occur in mid to late February, I am hopeful that the budget will address not only income tax rates for the middle class, but also the complexity of our tax system for both individuals and businesses. I believe that by focusing on reducing tax complexity and rates, we can have a code that is simpler to comply with while also making a more competitive market where consumers decide winners and losers – not the government. Be assured that I will be pushing for reducing tax complexity as our budget process advances, as well as other policies that will grow our economy and keep moving Wisconsin forward.

Thank you again for taking the time to read my first blog post. I look forward to continuing to communicate with you and serve the great people of Wisconsin’s 83rd Assembly District.

Best Wishes,
Dave
