you too can crew

Today marks the first public demo of an unmanned Montgolfier brothers hot air balloon on June 4th, 1783. Not far behind, it also marks the first flight by a woman, opera singer Elizabeth Thible, in a Montgolfier balloon just one year later on June 4th, 1784. The Montgolfier brothers of France are recognized as the inventors of lighter than air travel.

The paper said there was a charity breakfast at the Eagles Club for $3.75, and a pancake breakfast at Linden Grove, same time, for $5.00.

Took bike because both are close. Usually don't eat breakfast out, so the big decision would be won by the place with the best food, or cause.

deer neighbor

I've seen plenty of deer in the city of Waukesha. One as close as a block away from my home. Around 8:30 tonight there was a young deer right in my back yard.

this is my garden in the foreground.

7) I simply remember, 8) my favorite things

Thirty years ago my class was the first to go all four years through the new Waukesha North High School. For at least the last twelve I'd been looking forward to this weekend; graduation weekend at North; the day son graduates from the same school Mom and Dad attended.

Something similar to the road leading to this point in his life, there were last obstacles to overcome however.

there's room on Cloud Nine

full of hot air

Thankful everything went well during my four day weekend. Nick got his license, first try. Bri graduated, house got painted . . . very much I'm thankful for.

As a final exclamation point to a great weekend, I crewed for a different balloon early this morning. Cloud Nine produced some really great photos as it floated in the direction of the north shore of Pewaukee Lake. Among other reasons, crewing for him was pretty cool because of his dash-mounted GPS.

It's been three years since the beginning of WaukeshaNOW and this blog. There's still plenty going on to share. The enjoyment I get from writing hasn't receeded, and as long the computer is working, and I still have the time, I'd like to continue.

Last June the big story was flooding. In the last year it's the economy that's affected us the most. After 22 years of commuting to Milwaukee, I now waste resources driving 35 miles to Racine Cty. for work. The Journal Sentinel laid off many more quality writers, and even MyCommunityNOW, this website, let half the staff go. The Waukesha Freeman discontinued carrier delivery and no longer prints a Monday edition.  The state has a huge budget deficit. More money is going out to aid jobless and underemployed, but less coming in thanks to a stagnant economy.

couple cups short of a pot

1) sound of music, 2) raindrops on roses, 8) my favorite things, festival, full of hot air

Got more miles per cup of coffee this weekend, but not exactly by choice.

I started the first pot at quarter to four Saturday morning after the alarm went off. Only drank one cup, because you never know where, or if, you'll have a chance to stop while hot air balloon chasing.
