Are You Prepared for a Natural Disaster?

disability, Easter Seals Southeast Wisconsin, home, disaster, weather, storm, safety first

What if you lost power to your home and surrounding area for more than one day, maybe for a week?  What if there was a train derailment near your home that forced you to evacuate in the middle of the night?  What would you do?  Whether it is the weather or a local disaster, we can quickly lose control of our lives.   Watching the news you see what an ice storm that brings down power lines can do to a community, cutting off communication, blocking roads and snapping power lines.   It is more than inconvenient.    We are so dependent on electronic devices to manage everything from the heat in our home to comunicating with family and friends to receiving information.  A storm knocking out power can leave us literally leave us in the dark and isolated.

That’s why Easter Seals developed the s.a.f.e.t.y. first resources designed for consumers, employers, building owners and managers, community leaders, and fire and police professionals to plan for a potential situation in local communities.   Developing a personal safety plan in case of an evacuation order is vital to making it through such a stressful and challenging event.

As Easter Seals is a leading provider of services to those with physical and cognitive disabilities, s.a.f.e.t.y. first includes specialized questions and specialized situations that those living with disabilities could face in an emergency.
