During high school I and four other girls bonded.  While we weren't on a swim team as the gals in WCT's newest production, The Dixie Swim Club, running May 3-19, 2013, we did a lot together.  One of my favorite and fondest memories is the one I call 'The Last Hurrah!'

I'm sure having just read the title; your mind sang that song.  Or, perhaps you came right out and sang it.  The last time I worked the box office at WCT, I answered the phone and that's exactly what the patron did.  No hello.  He just sang the word.  Made me laugh!  This musical comedy does that; makes one want to laugh and sing right along with it.

There's a playground game I participated in as a young girl regarding a cookie jar and the question, who stole the cookies.  It was a rhythmic chant that tossed questions, answers and denials between the girls like a volley ball being tossed back and forth over a net.  "Who me?"  "Yes, you."  "It couldn't be."  "Then who?"

Do you remember filmstrips?  That's what life reminds me of.  It just keeps rolling along one scene after another.  And quickly, too. When I was a kid I couldn't wait to get older.  Now that I am, I'm glad for the wisdom age and faith has taught me; particularly being in the moment and realizing it's all I have and it's enough.  As busy as life is, that's not an easy thing to do is it?  The older I get, however; I'm finding it easier and I'm thankful for all of the moments - even the difficult ones.

Island Fever

For more information go to www.waukeshacivictheatre.org. We'd love to see you at the theatre!

My island experiences are Celtic flavored; first Prince Edwards Island (of Anne of Green Gables fame) and the second time, Ireland.  These two islands though not tropical in the typical sense are still beautiful, intriguing and mystical; although surprisingly, Ireland does have a tropical touch with some of its plants and trees.  Our time spent in both places was memorable.  If I had the opportunity I wouldn't hesitate to return nor would I mind living in either place.  We saw and experienced a lot during our stays; enough to whet my creative appetite and infect me just a bit with Island Fever.

For more information go to www.waukeshacivictheatre.org. We'd love to see you at the theatre!

Know any busybodies?  I'm sure you do, or have.  I remember the one we had living across the street when we lived in New Berlin.  I don't know if this woman had nothing better to do than watch our house, but it got to the point our families quit talking.  Though us kids waved just to be - friendly - whenever we passed by her house.

"Half" of me, courtesy of my father, comes from Russian/German/Jewish stock.  When I think of my Grandma and Grandpa Wolfsohn, I think of Grandpa's keen sense of fun and Grandma's wonderful cooking.  Mmm, the lavish dinners which I later learned were religious celebrations; the matzo balls and soup; chopped liver, borscht, salami, fat garlic pickles; the sweet sesame-flavored treat halvah, and the best corned beef I've ever eaten.  (Waukesha's Rochester Deli, is a very close second!)

Despite the busyness December brings, despite the sometimes familial and hidden calorie charges; both having the potential to explode their messes all over our inside and/or outside person - December is a good month.  And with every passing year I'm NOT working a retail job, the Scrooginess that has been clouding my Christmases for the last couple of decades is dissipating - finally.  Well, that and my purposeful determination to keep my focus on Who brought Christmas and why.  Keeping joy and laughter at the forefront helps!

Pure Imaginations - A Collective Effort

I've seen both renditions of the Willy Wonka films.  They're a fun ride through the fantastical; and there's no doubt one needs a good imagination to enjoy the tale; hence, my not being able to wrap my own imagination around this being a stage production.  I mean there's a chocolate river and the girl who blows up like a blueberry and a lot of scenes that require not only pure imagination but a great deal of thoughtful creativity.  And, they did it!

Alone at Last?

When my husband and I established our "nest" in 1977, it was full from the start; one of those package deal things.  "Buy" one, get two free.  Along the way two more boys arrived.  The oldest two came and went depending, but the youngest two were constants.  Other than an occasional church camp week, high school event or sleepover, alone time was rare, quite sporadic and greatly coveted.  So, when our youngest left home, we rejoiced - greatly!  Think Hallelujah Chorus.

Have Yourself a Memory-Making Merry Little Christmas...

For more information go to www.waukeshacivictheatre.org. We'd love to see you at the theatre!

'Back in the day,' the twenty-five days between Thanksgiving and Christmas were full of anticipation.  Nothing appeared in the stores or was strung across the streets until the day after the turkey was consumed.  Nothing!  It made the wait all the more exciting.  The days were filled with school and shopping and planning.  But what to do in the evenings and on long weekends till the 'big day' arrived?
