art, Carroll

A couple dozen artists, the community and Carroll students past and present took over Maxon Hall on the campus Friday evening. It was my first and last time visiting the old, stone building at the corner of Barstow and College.

A Christmas Carroll

1) sound of music, 7) I simply remember, 8) my favorite things, Carroll, Christmas

It wouldn't surprise me if charitable giving increases next weekend, along with greater empathy for others. Dickens' A Christmas Carol had that effect on readers 170 years ago and likely is still true today. Likewise, Christmas at Carroll, next weekend's awe-inspiring concert in Carroll's Shattuck Music Center has always had a positive transformative effect on me. I've been attending for years, and if I weren't in the spirit before the concert, then I sure was three hours later!

there is hope for Hope

Hope Center, Carroll

Plenty of hope to go around for Thursday's 15th Annual HOPE Thanksgiving Dinner and Auction fundraiser for Hope Center. We hoped to have a good turnout and successful auction, and were blessed with our largest gathering yet and raised more for the needy than with any previous dinner.

Carol and Carroll

1) sound of music, 7) I simply remember, 6) when I'm feeling sad, Carroll, Christmas

There will be much discussion today on what everyone was doing 50 years ago when they learned President Kennedy was shot. I don't remember the day, but as I was only 2-1/2 at the time I know what I was probably doing: dirtying diapers and napping between playing with my toys and teasing my sisters.

One last video of Sunday's 'Grass, Food & Lodging concert on the Main Lawn at Carroll University. Average age of audience: at least 50. Approximate crowd size: probably 200 to 250ish. Last time Grass, Food & Lodging played before this three performance reunion: 1980. Length of Sunday's concert: 3 hours. Guest performers welcomed on stage: at least four. I was one of many hundreds enjoying a little 'Grass on the grass last night as the reunion of once popular bluegrass band 'Grass, Food and Lodging entertained us for three hours in front of beautiful and historic Main Hall of Carroll University. Storms were a comin' when I left home, but they thankfully missed Waukesha and left us with cool breezes and cloudy skies. Only two drops of rain fell.

The end of National Volunteer Week and Donate Life Month began early for me with a 6:30 a.m. appointment Saturday for a dual red donation at BloodCenter of Wisconsin on Springdale.  I was concerned that after four months with the appointment I may not be able to keep it. I was trying to shake a cold I'd caught the week before, and was also asked if I could work Saturday morning.

Alas, Carroll University's academic year is coming to a close. This has been a great year for many wonderful concerts, and lectures, free and open to the public.  I thought we'd seen the last of the performances last weekend when the four scheduled (one Friday, two Saturday and one Sunday) hinted at a grand finale for a year I never wanted to see end.

Music is in the ear of the beholder. There's a lot I wouldn't consider "music," not to say others wouldn't enjoy it. If I find a song I encounter or am subjected to that is too loud or distasteful I either leave, turn it down or turn the channel. If I can do neither I just cringe and try to tune it out.

Thought I'd do a little biking before groceries Saturday. I'd just read about a short ride through Waukesha with the president of Carroll U, his wife, Mayor Scrima and others for a Ride with the President. They were pedalling through the historic McCall Street area, a side of town I don't get to nearly enough, to raise awareness and encourage use of alternative transportation. I didn't leave early enough.

Not missing it this time

This is concert season in Waukesha when we can look forward to decent, affordable music expertly performed by students of our universities and high schools. Last December I bemoaned missing the annual Christmas at Carroll, the best Christmas concert ever. I'm not going to let that happen again! The concert is Dec. 6th and 7th, so I have plenty of time to get tickets.
