1982 Milwaukee Brewers team coming to Waukesha SportsCards

Jan. 25, 2012 1:16 p.m. | Members of the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers team is cherished and remembered like none other in franchise history.

This weekend, many of those players will be back together for a Brewers Reunion at the Waukesha SportsCards and Sports Memorabilia shop, located at 821 Meadowbrook Road #9.

From Robin Yount, to Paul Molitor, to Rollie Fingers, the former stars will be there to sign autographs and greet fans looking to reminisce about the only team in franchise history to advance to the World Series.

The fabulous infield duo of Yount, a two-time AL MVP who served as the team’s shortstop until the 1985 season, and Jim Gantner, the team’s longtime second baseman, will be first to sign autographs from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m. Friday.

Yount and Gantner are also rare breeds as they both played their entire careers with the Brewers. Yount, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, was on the team from 1974–1993, while Gantner, a lifelong Wisconsin resident, played for the Brewers from 1976-1992.

Waukesha-area boys basketball teams in star-filled regional

1:54 p.m. | It’s a star-filled bracket.

That’s one way to characterize the regional of three of the Waukesha-area boys basketball teams after looking at the WIAA postseason brackets that were released last weekend.

From the state’s best team – Germantown – to arguably the state’s best player – Menomonee Falls’ J.P. Tokoto – this portion of the Division 1 bracket has plenty of sizzle.

There’s also a familiar Classic 8 foe – Arrowhead – that is suddenly one of the hotter teams around.

Waukesha West (12-9, 7-6 Classic 8), the fifth seed in the nine-team regional, received the best seed of the three schools and will open with Tokoto (a University of North Carolina recruit) and Falls (12-9, 7-6 Greater Metro Conference), the region’s fourth seed.

High school winter sports: Swimming, wrestling, hoops on schedule for Waukesha

Feb. 17, 2012 11:28 a.m. | It’s a busy weekend in the high school sports world. WIAA state swimming and diving championships are Saturday and the Waukesha-area schools will be well-represented in Madison.

The Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial co-op team – the sixth-ranked team in the last state coaches association poll, has a plethora of entries and is coming off a second-place finish at last year’s state meet. They are also on the heels of a second-place finish at last weekend’s sectional.

The Waukesha West/Mukwonago team and the Waukesha North/Kettle Moraine also have entries and look to finish off their seasons with a bang after the teams took third and fifth, respectively, at last weekend’s sectional.

Wrestling individual sectionals are Saturday as well and Waukesha South’s Bill Prochniewski is the one to watch. The 106-pounder is a perfect 42-0 this season and while he has his eyes on a state title as the No. 1-ranked wrestler in his weight class, he has to first finish off his sectional at Waukesha West. The first session begins at 10:30 a.m.

South’s Kyle Johnson (152 pounds) and Brock Milkent (285) will also look to follow up their regional titles with sectional wins.

Audit cites weaknesses in Waukesha County clerk operations

Feb. 16, 2012 4:42 p.m. | Waukesha - A number of weaknesses were found in Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus' office operations, according to a newly released audit report, including the failure to return about $27,000 in dog license fees owed municipalities that has accumulated over several years.

In response to the audit, Nickolaus said she's already instituted a number of recommended changes.

The county's internal audit manager, Lori Schubert, and Nickolaus will discuss the findings at the County Board's Executive Committee meeting at 9 a.m. Monday.

None of the nine recommendations contained in the audit report was ranked as most critical in importance, but nearly all were described as having a significant impact on efficiency and effectiveness.

The audit did not examine most of Nickolaus' election systems and duties, which were audited in the fall of 2010. In April, Nickolaus' failure to count 14,000 votes from Brookfield in unofficial election night returns - or to tell the public about it for nearly two days - temporarily tipped the apparent Supreme Court election outcome and led to a costly and time-consuming statewide recount.

Recycling, landfill dumping both drop in Waukesha County

Feb. 14, 2012 3:58 p.m. | Waukesha - Waukesha County residents recycled slightly less last year, but the amount of trash they threw into landfills decreased by an even bigger percentage - continuing an eight-year trend.

And while the amount of recyclables processed at the Waukesha County Materials Recycling Facility in 2011 dropped slightly, their sale at markets brought in significantly more revenue than a year earlier, said Karen Fiedler, supervisor of the county's solid waste program.

Twenty-five of the county's 37 communities haul their recyclables to the county processing plant in Waukesha. In 2011, the facility processed 21,431 tons of recyclables, about 1% less than 2010. The sale of bottles, steel and aluminum cans, glass and paper brought in $1.6 million, compared with just under $1.2 million a year ago, Fiedler said.

Money from the sale of recyclables, plus a state grant that dropped about 40% this year, to $874,000, are used both to return funds to the participating communities and earmarked in a fund balance that will eventually help the county replace its recycling facility in the future.

Fiedler said that the level of greenhouse gas emissions reduced from recycling those materials was equivalent to taking more than 6,400 cars off the road for a year, and it kept 50,000 cubic yards of waste out of landfills, equivalent to a football field filled more than 30 feet high.

Town of Waukesha settles snowplowing dispute for $297,500

Feb. 13, 2012 1:34 p.m. | Waukesha - The Waukesha Town Board will pay its former snowplowing contractor $297,500 to settle a year-old lawsuit over a disputed contract and service charges.

Eric S. Jacobson Grading Co. had been seeking $355,477 plus interest and attorney's fees.

With the settlement agreed to, Waukesha County Circuit Judge J. Mac Davis on Friday dismissed the town's lawsuit and Jacobson's counterclaim.

Jacobson had provided snow plowing services to the town since 1984 and last winter was in the first year of a new three-year contract. The new contract, which handed more control to the contractor, was approved in 2010 by a Town Board majority that was shortly afterward ousted in a recall election.

The newly elected board members then attempted - but after a deadline spelled out in the contract - to impose new rules and town oversight on Jacobson, which the contractor ignored.

Selection on city administrator search firm will wait a couple more days

Feb. 13, 2012 10:54 a.m. | The Human Resources Committee intended on selecting a search firm for Waukesha’s next city administrator on Saturday when it met with the final three national firms at City Hall.

But that decision was put on hold due to one of the firms not being able to make it to the interview.

Ald. Joan Francoeur said Voorhees Associates, based out of Illinois, could not attend its 12:30 p.m. interview due to an illness.

As a result, the HR Committee will instead meet with Voorhees Associates at the regularly-scheduled HR Committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Room 207 at City Hall, 201 Delafield St.

Francoeur said the committee’s intention is still to make a decision on a firm by the end of Wednesday’s meeting and added the fact that they didn’t interview all three on Saturday isn’t going to slow down the process.
