Canine Play, Play, PLAY with Dr. Patricia McConnell!

HAWS, adopt, Dr. Patricia McConnell, play, Essential Oils, Pet Fair, Ride for Rover

On Thursday, August 16, at 6:30pm, don't miss the opportunity to join Patricia McConnell at HAWS for an evening talk on Canine Play! Play! Play!

Play is fun, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just goofy or frivolous!  Play is powerful stuff, and it has a profound influence on your relationship with your dog.  Learn how play can enhance your relationship with your dog, improve your dog’s responsiveness and provide your dog with the mental and physical exercise they need.  We’ll talk about up-to-date research on how to tell your dog you want to play (most of us aren’t very good at it!), some charming tricks and games to wow your friends, and most importantly, how NOT to play with your dog.  If you'd like a happier, more responsive dog and a closer relationship with each other, then this talk is for you.

The registration fee is $40.00.  Pre-registration is required and is available online or by contacting Khris Erickson, HAWS' Humane Educator, at 262-542-8851, x118.

Patricia McConnell, PhD, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, (CAAB) has made a lifelong commitment to improving the relationship between people and animals.  She is known worldwide as an expert on canine and feline behavior and dog training, and for her engaging and knowledgeable dog training books, DVDs and seminars.  For 14 years she dispensed advice about behavior problems, and information about animal behavior research, on Wisconsin Public Radio's Calling All Pets, which was heard in over 110 cities around the country.  Dr. McConnell has presented seminars all over the United States and in Canada, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Belgium, Scotland and New Zealand.

Books and DVDs will be available for purchase, and Dr. McConnell will sign books after her talk!  Please join us!

By the way - If you haven't already, check out HAWS' awesome August happenings!  An "Essential Oils" seminar is on the 17th, our Pet Fair and Ride for Rover "merge" on the 18th, Puppy Parties happen every Sunday evening...and our Mobile Adoption Center is all over, bringing happy tails to you!

entertainment tonight

Friday Night Live, 1) sound of music

A fairly decent line up of performers, and cooler weather, will greet visitors to Waukesha's Freeman Friday Night Live tonight from 6:30 to 9:00 in historic downtown Waukesha. Finian McCoy will be warming up the crowd at the Steaming / People's / Almont stage and getting them in the mood for next weekend's Irish Fest. Additionally, five other stages will host the delightful sounds of Cheryl McCrary, Theiss & O'Connor, Peter Llanas, Peter D'Amore and the Andrew Gelles Band.

It's been brought to my attention that regular WaukeshaNOW reader Scott Ludtke has generously offered his talents in creating a website for Waukesha Freeman Friday Night Live. While it's still new, it contains all the elements of a good site: schedule, links, maps, blog, performers... I encourage everyone to take a look and bookmark it.

Paul Ryan for President?

politics

I turned on the TV this morning in time to see Governor Romney endorse Janesville's Paul Ryan. The morning paper was already hinting Ryan would be the running mate. The radio I listened to on the way back from an early a.m. blood donation noted the announcement would be coming soon.

A presidential running mate from Wisconsin would be huge for this state and undoubtedly guarantees more Republican votes from the undecideds. I like Paul Ryan, met him once. My Dad also hailed from Janesville. But president? After millions spent by Romney for president for him to endorse Ryan for president instead?

Tuesday's primary

Freeman, politics, St. Mary

Election Tuesday went really well at St. Mary's 8th District polls. We were a little overstaffed and had low turnout, but it was good practice for November. Again very satisfied with all my poll workers and the location.

It's too bad Gina didn't advance to the general election for county clerk. I've enjoyed working with her for the elections and thought she'd do a good job.

Adopt 4 Paws from HAWS - Charlie is waiting!

HAWS, adopt, pit bull, Romp the Runway, fundraiser, dog, pets

This special boy is just one of the many awesome pets available for adoption at HAWS!

Meet Charlie, a 7-years-young Pit Bull.  He hasn't been hanging out with us at HAWS for too long...but we didn't need much time at all to fall in love with him.  And pamper him (as evidenced by these pictures)!

Charlie is a well-mannered dog by ANY standards, and would work well in many households.  He's lovable and loving.

Charlie says:
"Just look at my face!!!  I am Charlie and if you are looking for the 'perfect pit'...I am it!  Somehow I managed to wind up here at HAWS.  Don't get me wrong, it's GREAT here, but I am a family dog and deserve the best family ever.  Please read up on my breed and remember lots of people don't get that Pits can be sweet and calm....and that's totally me!  I am good with cats and other dogs and kids are fine, but not ones that are too small.  (I am strong and can knock the little ones over.)  Stop in and see me - I am just the BEST!

HAWS is open 7 days a week for viewing and adoption - what are you waiting for?!?!

By the way - reserve your spot on the runway today!  HAWS fashionable fundraiser, Romp the Runway, is Friday, September 28, from 5:30-8:30pm at Silver Spring Country Club.  A fashion show featuring styles from local boutiques is accompanied by cocktails, appetizers, silent and live auctions and more.  Join us - admission is $75 per person, and VIP tables are available!

when life hands you lemons...

Bailey and I hiked up to the university to watch what looked to be a good sunset last night. On the way there we stopped at a lemonade stand. Price was a little steep, but the ade had a good taste to it. First time in at least two years I stopped for a lemonade. Stands just aren't very common these days.

We took a few photos of the sunset and upon our return learned it actually was Lemonade Day! What a strange coincidence, and beautiful sunset!

A Waukesha Aviation Champion Passes

This last weekend was another Wings Over Waukesha air show. Special this year, not only at the air show, was honoring pilots from WWII.  I was saddened today while glancing at the obituaries to see that Fred Flood has passed away. Most aviation people in the county who have been around for a while or at least remember when Aero Park Airport graced Lisbon and Lannon roads, knew Fred. Also many Amateur (ham) Radio operators knew Fred, (W9WAW) from his television/video experimentation before we all took television for granted.

Fred and my father, Robert, also a pilot and ham radio operator, worked together. It was from that relation that Fred entered into my life. One day my Dad announced to me that he joined me into a sailplane club, also known as gliders. Fred was my instructor and after less than three hours of instruction, I soloed a WWII trainer, a Schweizer TG-2. Fred also taught me much about the mechanics of aircraft. We would remove the wings from the sailplane in order to transport it to other fields or to recover it from an off-airport landing. He also had another sailplane, a Brieglib BG-6, that we rebuilt. I learned fabric work on that plane and also why the fluid that is brushed on the fabric to fill it is called "dope". Breathing too much makes you drunk, or dopey. As time went on I got my pilot's license and eventually began flying the same airplane that towed our gliders into the air.

Thinking About "Garage Hopping?" for Beer and Fun? Think Again

Garage Hopping, criminal defense lawyer, Huppertz & Powers

You’ll forgive me if I might seem to be a little behind the times on this one. Recently, I worked on a case surrounding a problem I didn’t realize had grown to such proportions. It’s a crime that seems kind of fun and innocent at first until you think about the potential criminal implications.

It’s called “garage hopping,” a common activity among college age young people that’s spreading to high schoolers. For example, these kids are having a party, have had too much alcohol and then decide to seek out new sources of liquid refreshment. They start cruising neighborhoods looking for open garage doors and hoping to spot a refrigerator which might contain beer, wine and other goodies.
