GuitarTown Gala
I'll have to blog in detail later. Last night I got home from the gala after 10:00 and am starting work 2 hours early so I don't miss the Friday Night Live festivities.
Unlike most of the other GuitarTown artists Jeff Seymour had been keeping his 10 foot creation under wraps. I had no idea what to expect from him, and what I'd imagined was vastly different from what we got to finally see last night as a cold light rain fell.
Tableside guacamole at Serrano's in Waukesha
The owners of Habanero’s Mexican Kitchen on Mayfair Road in Wauwatosa have opened Serrano’s Mexican Restaurant in Waukesha.
It’s at N7-W23825 Blue Mound Road, previously the site of Louis Desert Grill.
day II
Made it down for Friday's unveiling and first Friday Night Live of the year. Almost all businesses were open and most were busy, which was good to see. The crowd wasn't nearly as large as the Harley anniversary event, but then again beer wasn't allowed in the streets. Just as well. The weather turned cool and wet, was 51 degrees by the time I left, and hot drinks were the preferred beverage.
The Couri Insurance Mainstage was surrounded by a good-sized group and the music was good, though a little loud, especially after 10:00 p.m. I left at ten and Sammy Llanas was still playing, but I doubt they played much longer.
day III
Saturday's weather was absolutely gorgeous after two days of cold and rain. I started by travelling to Prairie Home and the Les Paul memorial to talk to and hear from Rusty Paul, but he was called back East for some unknown reason. Sue Baker was there and I collected a first day of issue Les Paul card from her for which I'm appreciative.
After that I just wanted to try the walking tour, so I parked in front of the Waukesha County Museum and headed west. Before I went far I noticed people carrying guitar pick shaped maps of the tour and picked one up for myself at Martha Merrell's. As I continued I ran into friends who were also just starting and heading in the same direction so we went together. Many more people asked where we picked up our maps so we picked up a spare at one of the galleries, giving it away shortly after.

Now You See Him, Now You Don't - What's a Busybody to Do?
Know any busybodies? I'm sure you do, or have. I remember the one we had living across the street when we lived in New Berlin. I don't know if this woman had nothing better to do than watch our house, but it got to the point our families quit talking. Though us kids waved just to be - friendly - whenever we passed by her house.
My mom recalls a time when her family shared a phone line with others. There was one particular woman who would pick up her phone regardless if the call was meant for her or not. Her presence was identifiable by her breathing. When my mom and her friends heard that, they'd talk about her. She'd disconnect and rather loudly, too.
A big event at the Expo Center
Waukesha - Whatever happens in Tuesday's recall election, when Gov. Scott Walker speaks with his supporters, he'll likely have a nationwide audience.
There are nearly two dozen TV satellite trucks parked outside the Waukesha County Exposition Center, the site of Walker's post-election rally. TV crews have also set up interview areas outside the building.

one for the history books
Tuesday was one for the books and not just because there was a rare Transit of Venus that day. Though it'll be 2117 the next time Venus crosses the sun, some say we'd probably be dead then. Now if we weren't that would be historic.
It's not often that a worldwide radio broadcast, the BBC, reports on Wisconsin elections. A marketwatcher friend even mentioned to me that it looked like the Wisconsin election affected worldwide stock markets.
Happy Birthday Les!
Today Les would've been 97. A while back I started a lesblog and I'm thinking today would be a good time for it's debut. You can find it by clicking here. I've covered much of what is said in this WaukeshaNOW blog, but what's nice about my lesblog is all the links added to it. Most of the GuitarTown artists are linked to as is the Chasing Sound! documentary, which I highly recommend by the way. There's a side widget for Les Paul videos... You could spend a lot of time and learn a lot about Les from all the links and videos.
Let me know what you think.
Fahrenheit 84
"We have too many cellphones. We've got too many internets. We have got to get rid of those machines. We have too many machines now."
As I type this it's 84 degrees in Waukesha. Blogging on a laptop about the passing of Ray Bradbury is something you'd never see him do... blogging and using a computer. Driving a car... or even dying, for that matter, is something else Ray would never do if he could help it.

Waukesha native lands teaching fellowship
The daughter of a teacher and a school board member, Kaitlyn O’Bryan of Waukesha has been awarded a fellowship from the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation worth $175,000 over five years.
The foundation awarded fellowships to 34 beginning teachers in 19 states. The fellowship program is aimed at those who are on the verge of their teaching certificate. The goal is to help new teachers get established in the profession, while also limiting the number of people who leave the field. As a result, the fellowship represents a commitment by O’Bryan to teaching math once she finishes her teacher preparation course work at the University of Minnesota
nick name
Many nick names are used at ODW where I work. None of the names are derogatory, several just shortened versions of given names. I feel it's just another step in making co-workers feel more like friend or family.
Seems to me some of the nick names get started by the same one or two people. For a long time I was known at Dr. Lee until I finally said something. I felt the term should be reserved for those who've earned it. A few call me by my first name, one calls me Mr. Brien, and another occasionally refers to me as Aristotle. (Don't ask.)
marsh mellow
How long has it been? Three weeks since last it's rained? Been so dry lately the Fox is very low with sandbars showing in places.
So what does it do the one time of year the Friends of Vernon Marsh, and I, take the canoes and kayaks out on the Fox to explore the marsh?
Festival of Creativity
Everything seemed so new and different. I don't recall ever visiting the Lakefront Festival of Arts before. I was blown away by the creativity.
I did not know how very few Wisconsin artists show at the fest. I did see Waukesha GuitarTown artists Katie Musolff and Andy Fletcher, creators of "Red Fox" kept at Rochester Deli, showing but most of the 176 artists and craftsmen call other states their home.

summer fest
Last year I blogged about a facebook-arranged, informal high school reunion: The Unofficial, Unsanctioned Waukesha North Multi-Year Reunion. It was held at Crabby Joe's in Waukesha and included a visit to Friday Night Live to see fellow classmate Tim McNulty and hear his band, Barefoot 'N Bluejeans, outside Martha Merrell's.
This year's 2nd Annual unsanctioned reunion was combined with an existing event, a summer festival in it's 19th year: Summer Solstice 2012. Though summer officially began Wednesday, the unofficial reunion / Summer Solstice was Saturday.
