3 seriously injured in Brookfield crash

June 23, 2009 5:34 p.m. | Brookfield — Three people were seriously injured in a crash in Brookfield Tuesday morning, Police Capt. Phil Horter said.

William and Carol Ann Joseph, of Waukesha, were on a motorcycle and taken in separate Flight for Life helicopters to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, he said. William Joseph is in critical condition and his wife's condition is being evaluated, a hospital spokesman said.

A teenage Sussex girl, who was driving a car, was taken by ambulance to Elmbrook Memorial Hospital. Police refused to release her name.

The motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Capitol Drive when it was struck by the car at Mitchell Park Drive at 8:50 a.m., according to the preliminary investigation. There is a stop sign on Mitchell Park Drive, Horter said.

Connecture to move headquarters to Waukesha

Feb. 06, 2012 3:06 p.m. | Health insurance software provider Connecture Inc. will move its headquarters from Atlanta to Waukesha County and, bolstered by a grant of state financial assistance, will add more than 100 jobs here, Gov. Scott Walker said Monday.

With Walker visiting Connecture's offices in the city of Pewaukee, the governor's office said in a statement that Connecture will receive up to $1.2 million in state credits over three years. In exchange, Connecture will create "over 100 high-paying professional technology jobs within the state" during that period, the statement said.

Broadly speaking, the agreement forgives Connecture $12,000 of its state corporate income tax bill for each of up to 100 jobs it adds here through 2014.

Connecture said last week that it is currently hiring to fill 25 positions and expects to add another 75 this year but didn't mention plans to move its headquarters.

The company started in Atlanta in the 1990s, and in 2004 purchased a Waukesha County firm, Riverwood Solutions. Since then the firm has maintained offices in both places and has a third office in Farmington, Conn.

Police evacuate hotel rooms after woman's frantic call

Feb. 05, 2012 11:08 a.m. | A frantic call from an Indiana woman who feared her gang-member husband was planning to shoot her led Waukesha police to evacuate several rooms at a hotel northeast of Waukesha Saturday night.

The woman called police about 9:15 p.m., saying she had gotten into an argument at a McDonald's restaurant with her 32-year-old husband from Indiana, who she said was a gang member, according to Waukesha police.

The argument escalated when the couple returned to their hotel, the Extended Stay at 2520 Plaza Court. The woman stayed in her minivan with her six kids while her husband went into the hotel room. She feared that he was going to get his gun to shoot her.

Police arrived and escorted the woman and her children to safety while surrounding the hotel room. Police also evacuated nearby rooms and called the man out of his room. He surrendered himself and his .45-caliber gun to the police about 10:15 p.m. The man was taken into custody without injury.

Police said they plan to recommend he be charged with recklessly endangering safety and domestic disorderly conduct.

Friday Night Hoops: Rematch games in store for Classic 8 contests tonight

Feb. 03, 2012 11:34 a.m. | There’s only a few weeks left in the WIAA boys and girls basketball regular season and all the games matter now.

Whether you’re in first or at the bottom of the conference, there’s something to play for – be it a roster spot, conference positioning, WIAA postseason seeding or simply pride.

Like all of the conference games going forward, these games are repeats of earlier in the season.

And unlike last week, these eight games were a little tougher to predict, because after reviewing the matchups I think there could be some very entertaining games. I think most of them appear to pit evenly matched teams against each other.

Below is the schedule of the games in the Classic 8 that involve Waukesha-area schools with a description on the teams and my predicted winner in bold.

While that will be a new experience for those students, singing at schools is nothing new for the “The Cat’s Pajamas.”

Feb. 02, 2012 11:14 a.m. | Connecture Inc., a growing health insurance software firm, is hiring for 25 jobs in Waukesha and expects to add another 75 this year.

The Atlanta-based company already employs 115 people at its Waukesha office, and demand for its services is increasing as insurers and others react to the sweeping health care reform act approved in March 2010, marketing manager Megan Riddle said Thursday.

Companywide employment has risen by more than half since 2010, with more than 200 now working for Connecture at its three offices - Waukesha, Atlanta and Farmington, Conn., Riddle said.

In Waukesha, she said, the positions the company is looking to fill pay about $85,000 a year on average.

"We are looking at Java developers, business analysts, project managers, quality-assurance analysts - so lots of software development jobs," Riddle said.

10-foot Gibson guitars arrive in Waukesha

Feb. 01, 2012 9:26 p.m. | Waukesha - Ten 10-foot-tall guitars, modeled after the Les Paul Gibson, arrived on a flatbed trailer - guarded by a mammoth fiberglass bulldog - Tuesday, a sure sign that the GuitarTown Project is for real.

The Gibson Foundation and Mayor Jeff Scrima announced earlier this month that Waukesha had been selected for the project, following on the heels of cities such as Los Angeles, Nashville and London.

In other GuitarTown Project cities, the guitars typically were decorated by artists, often signed by celebrities and auctioned off to raise money for charity.

A Waukesha steering committee will select artists to turn the plain pieces into works of art that will be mounted in prominent spaces downtown, said Lynn Gaffey, artist and gallery owner who serves on the committee.

The guitars were made by F.A.S.T. Corp. of Sparta. George Clemmerson, who delivered the hollow sculptures, said they weigh about 50 pounds each. They're free standing but came with metal stands. The bulldog that accompanied them was headed to a Beloit restaurant, Clemmerson said.

Giant Gibson guitars to be delivered Tuesday in Waukesha

Jan. 30, 2012 2:35 p.m. | When Waukesha found out it was going to be a Gibson GuitarTown city a few weeks ago, officials knew the process would be quick.

The latest step in this process will take place on Tuesday when 10, 10-foot tall guitars were delivered to Spring Artisan Village, 521 Wisconsin Ave., in Waukesha.

Almont Gallery owner Lynn Gaffey, who is one of seven members on the Waukesha GuitarTown steering committee formed by Mayor Jeff Scrima, said the guitars were to arrive between 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Originally, the project called for 20 Les Paul fiberglass guitars - 10 playable guitars and 10, 10-foot tall guitars.

But Martha Merrell's Books and Cafe owner Norm Bruce said Monday that Gibson will now donate five more playable guitars to the project to bring the total of playable guitars to 15.

With the season approaching the last month of the year, conference positioning and playoff seeding is on the line.

Here is your guide for high school basketball games around the area tonight. All varsity games begin at approximately 7:30 p.m.
