Van Scyoc to face Marek in town chairman race

Town Chairwoman Angie E. Van Scyoc will have a challenger for the spring 2013 election.

According to Assistant Town Clerk Eryn Baudo, John Marek, a general contractor and real estate investor, has turned in his campaign registration statement.

Marek, who has lived in the town since 2000, confirmed last week he plans on running against Van Scyoc.

While Marek has no previous governmental experience, he does have experience running a campaign.

As a Republican candidate, he ran for the 84th Assembly District seat in 2010. He was second in a highly-contested four-person Republican Primary race that Mike Kuglitsch eventually won after Marek requested a recount.

The final numbers - Kuglitsch won by 173 votes (4,496 to Marek's 4,323) - held.

Kuglitsch then easily defeated Democratic candidate Don Vanpool, of the Town of Waukesha, in the general election to replace Rep. Mark Gundrum, who left office earlier that year to become a Waukesha County circuit judge.

Marek attended the Town of Waukesha Board meeting Dec. 27 and aired some of his concerns that he has regarding how the town is managing its finances.

Van Scyoc has been at the helm since she won a recall election over longtime Chairman Bob Tallinger in 2010. Before that, Van Scyoc served on the town's Plan Commission.

Supervisor 2 Everett German and Supervisor 4 Brian Fischer are also up for re-election. As of Friday they had no challengers to their seats. 

German and Fischer have not seen eye-to-eye with Van Scyoc in the past few months and it shows during board meetings.

Tired of their bickering with Van Scyoc, the two supervisors were recently called out at a Town Board meeting by a resident.

After hiring an attorney to investigate an open meetings and open records violation, German is after Van Scyoc's email records over the last six months as part of the open records request. These include 6,000 emails and will cost German $300 for the production of them.
