Waukesha City Police seized on Aug. 28 medical equipment, suspicious documents and a handgun from the home of a 35-year-old Waukesha woman suspected of practicing unlicensed dentistry.
The search warrant was issued at the behest of the Waukesha County District Attorney’s Office, according to the search warrant affidavit. The office had received reports that children were being brought into a nonprofit dental clinic complaining of pain, bleeding, and laryngitis, the result of shoddy orthodontic work.
The children had allegedly had braces placed on their teeth by a Waukesha woman operating an orthodontic clinic out of her home, the affidavit states. An adult patient told investigators that he was operated on while laying on the woman’s couch in her living room.
An examination of one 12-year-old boy by the nonprofit Waukesha County Community Dental Clinic showed that the patient had cement on his gums, causing inflammation, bleeding and pain, the affidavit states.
The boy’s parents said that they had heard about the unlicensed dentist from a friend. They showed up at the woman’s house and she had a white cart filled with orthodontic tools in her living room.
The woman charged the parents $350 to put the braces on and said the boy needed to return every month, at a cost of $50, to have the braces adjusted. The woman told another patient that the procedure would altogether cost $900, the complaint states, significantly less than if the service were provided by a licensed dentist.
According to the affidavit, an undercover officer contacted the suspect and arranged to have braces placed on his own daughter’s teeth. The woman allegedly invited the officer in and showed him numerous elastic bands she could use in the procedure. The bands were decorated with cartoon characters and hearts, the affidavit states.
The woman does not currently face charges related to the alleged behavior.
