Kids learn how pioneers turned work into play

Aug. 4, 2009 | 0 comments

Kids had a chance to roll back the clock this summer as the Waukesha County Museum presented a series of summer camps. And there's still time to enroll in the last camp of the season.

The first camp, Fur Trading Fun, had the kids explore the games, celebrations and other pastimes of the Native American and Early European explorers who live in Wisconsin in the centuries before the state even existed.

During the most recent camp, Pioneer Pastimes, kids discover how the Welsh, Irish, English, Scottish,

and German settlers of the mid-1800s often turned chores into games and used materials they found on

their farms or around their homes to make toys.

The last camp of the summer, Immigrants Imagination, will explore some of the toys, games, and celebrations

modern immigrants to Waukesha County have brought with them from Mexico, Puerto Rico, India,

and China.

The camp will be Aug. 18 to 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Campers must be 6 to 12 years old at time of camp.

Campers will need to wear comfortable clothing and

sneakers that they can get dirty. They should also

bring a bag lunch that does not need refrigeration.

Registration is required.
