Waukesha — Three of the city's main thoroughfares - Wisconsin Avenue, Grand Avenue and Summit Avenue - are slated for road improvement construction this summer, according to the Department of Public Works.
While Federal stimulus funds and state dollars are handling the cost of two of the four projects, the city is paying for the others..
The Wisconsin Avenue project is approximately a half-mile long from North West Avenue to West Broadway. The project involves replacing pavement, upgrades to traffic signals and street lights, as well as replacing pavement and some sidewalks, curbs and gutters. There will also be upgrades to handicap ramps.
The project is expected to be completed by the middle of October.
The Wisconsin Avenue project is estimated to cost about $1.2 million, all of which is being provided through the federal stimulus program.
During construction there will be eastbound traffic only with detours marked for west bound traffic.
Work on South Grand Avenue is underway and is expected to be completed by the end of October, according to a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Works.
The project is a combination of reconstruction of the road and replacing utilities. Sanitary sewer will be relayed from West College Avenue to Estberg Avenue. There will also be improvements on the water main between W. Newhall Avenue to Estberg Avenue.
The South Grand Avenue project is estimated to cost about $1.3 million, all being paid for by the city.
South Grand Avenue will be closed during the road reconstruction which will include adding storm sewer, upgrading street lighting, removing and replacing the curbs, gutters, driveway approaches and pavement.
The Summit Avenue and North Grandview Boulevard project involves widening of the road to accommodate some additional lanes. North Grandview Boulevard will be closed during the construction. There will be marked detour routes and Summit Avenue will be limited to one lane in each direction. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid to late July and be completed in early October.
The work will include removal and replacement of pavement, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and driveway approaches.
The Summit/North Grandview Avenue project estimated cost is $960,000, which is being paid for by the state
Work is also slated for Columbia Avenue which links Racine Avenue and Broadway. The road will be closed during construction which is expected to begin in late June and extend to the end of September.
The work will include water main replacement and removal and replacement of existing curb and gutter, drive approaches and pavement.
The Columbia Avenue project is estimated at $379,000; all paid for by the city.
