In the fall of 2010, the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha had 2,240 students enrolled, enough to make it the largest freshman-sophomore campus in the UW system, according to information from the 2010-11 UW System Fact Book.

UW-Waukesha is one of 13 freshman-sophomore campuses in the UW system, which also includes 13 four-year universities and the statewide UW-Extension. Altogether, the institutions have a combined enrollment of more than 182,000 students. The UW Colleges, as the freshman-sophomore campuses are called, had a combined enrollment of 14,385 students in fall 2010.

Students enrolled in one of the 13 UW Colleges are guaranteed admission as a junior to one of the state's four-year universities.

UW-Waukesha opened in 1966 as en extension of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and had an enrollment of 500 students its first year. The first classes met in fall 1966 at Mt. St. Paul Seminary, as the college's new buildings were not yet ready for use. UW-Waukesha's land and buildings are owned by Waukesha County, which bought the land for the 86-acre campus in March 1965.

The next largest freshman-sophomore college in the UW College system is UW-Fox Valley, which in fall 2010 had a total enrollment of 1,830. The smallest freshman-sophomore college in the UW system is UW-Richland, which had an enrollment of 454 students in fall 2010.

  1. Thank you for posting this! One quick clarification about guaranteed admission: Students are guaranteed junior status at one of the four-year UW schools if they earn their Associate of Arts and Science degree. Even if they don't receive a degree, however, their credits do transfer to the four-year UW schools.
