WCT celebrates love with Valentine cards
'Love American Style' features funny Valentines
Whether you are looking for a romantic date night, or a simple family-friendly Valentine adventure, Waukesha Civic Theatre's production of "Love American Style" will make you laugh about love.
This cabaret-style performance, part of the group's Comedy Tonight series takes a look at love in its many forms.
Doug Jarecki, education and outreach administrator for Waukesha Civic Theatre and emcee for "Love American Style" said the goal of the show is to make people laugh at themselves and their relationships and to bring lesser-known fun songs about love to the stage.
"It's just a collection of songs and little bits of monologues, all love related and most of it falls on the lighter sillier side of love," Jarecki said. "We just thought it would be fun to get a group of Civic regulars here to perform. I asked everyone to pick a song that may be off the beaten path a little bit that maybe people don't often hear."
The cast, ranging in age from 9 to over 50 has had minimal rehearsal time for the 90-minute performance.
They also plan to use whatever set on hand and provide their own props or costumes for their piece.
"We wanted this to be a very informal laid-back casual night," Jarecki said. "There are no lines or story threads to follow, this is more a night for the civic theater community to indulge its goofy side for Valentine's Day. It's just fun."
The cast boasts namesrecognizable to those familiar with the theater including a monologue by managing artistic director John Cramer and a performance by box office and house manager Kelly Vance. Elena Cramer, Jason Powell, Kelly Doherty, Jordan Gwiazdowski, Allison Chicorel and Liz Norton are among 12 familiar faces performing 15 unique pieces.
In addition to quirky songs about apathetic men and an original song about Facebook love, Jarecki said "Love American Style" will preview the love song "All or Nothin'" from Waukesha Civic Theatre's upcoming performance of "Oklahoma" which opens in early March.
"Love American Style" falls on a Thursday and is part of the group's Comedy Tonight series in which seven times throughout the season, they bring in outside acts to make the community laugh. According to Jarecki, the group has had everything from improvisation groups to concerts and stand up comedians and this cabaret fits right in.
"I hope the audience gets 90 minutes of being able to laugh at themselves and their relationships and just enjoy the songs and not take it too seriously," Jarecki said. "It's just a fun night. A big part of love is laughter."
So if you are still looking for a Valentine's Day idea, this one-night-only family-friendly performance is meant to make you smile.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and $6 for season subscribers. The performance begins at 7 p.m.
