What is going on at the old Northview School?

Jan. 3, 2012 | 0 comments

For awhile, there was talk of putting a homeless shelter in the old Northview School at the corner of Northview Road and Grandview Blvd., but for-sale signs continue to mark the property. So did those plans die?

They did not, and in fact, the school is currently being used as a homeless shelter, although it might not look like it from the outside. Hebron House of Hospitality uses the building's gym for an overflow homeless shelter to house adult men during the winter, according to Bill Leech of Shorewest, the listing agent for the property. This is the second winter that Hebron House has used the gym.

The building is owned by Waukesha State Bank, which took over the deed for the property when the building's most recent owner, West Suburban Christian Academy, closed its doors in 2010.

Hebron House has put an offer in to buy the property, but the closing is being delayed while the nonprofit organization works to gather all the grants and other financing it needs to complete the purchase, Leech said. During the delay, Shorewest will entertain other offers on the property, which includes the 32,000-square-foot building and three acres of land.

While the building is old - the original building was constructed in 1898, with an addition put on in 1977 - it's in pretty nice condition, as the Christian school did a lot of updates during its years of ownership, Leech said.
