If you're a regular library user, chances are good that there's been a time or two when the materials you checked out didn't make it back to the library on time.
The Waukesha Public Library charges 25 cents per day for overdue books, CDs and magazines, 50 cents a day for toys and $1 per day for DVDs, interlibrary loan materials and e-readers. So what does the library do with the fines and other fees?
The money goes right back into the library's general budget, where it helps pay for programming, collections development and personnel, said Library Director Grant Lynch.
In 2013, the library expects to collect about $168,000 in fines and fees, with a portion coming from replacement fees charged to patrons who lose or destroy library materials. (FYI, if you check out an e-reader, be careful with it: The replacement cost for that item is $175.)
The library's total budget for 2013 is $3.61 million.
