Waukesha grid teams enjoy huge first week

Aug. 31, 2010 | 0 comments

Four games played. Four wins in the victory column. Last Friday was a great opening night for the football teams from Waukesha high schools.

Waukesha West 41, Whitefish Bay 13

West scored on several big plays, getting two long touchdown runs of 54 and 57 yards from junior running back Joe Schobert, who also scored on an 11-yard run for the first points of the game. Schobert finished with a whopping 152 yards on just eight carries.

Senior wide receiver Nick Tehan also had a big night, catching four passes, good for 80 yards.

The competition will get a lot tougher for the Wolverines this week when they host talented Wisconsin Lutheran. Wisco stunned defending WIAA Division 1 state champion Milwaukee Marquette last Thursday night, 28-7.

West and Wisconsin Lutheran have split their last four meetings.

Catholic Memorial 41, West Allis Central 7

Catholic Memorial scored on six of its first seven possessions and rolled over West Allis Central. In 2009 the Bulldogs stunned the Crusaders in the season opener, 17-14.

The Memorial defense held Central to just one first down and 32 total yards in the first two quarters.

Offensively, senior fullback Pete Karczewski led the way with 108 yards on 12 carries. Senior halfback Broc Kocour gained 84 yards on just six carries. Senior quarterback Dominic Zanoni also scored two touchdowns, and kicker Chris Colombe also booted a 27-yard field goal.

Memorial, who will open the season with three consecutive road games, will make a long road trip when they play at Hayward/Lac Courte Oreilles on Friday night.

Waukesha North 28, Watertown 13

The Northstars, under first-year coach Scott Jazdzewski, scored the final 14 points of the game to defeat Watertown. The two teams battled to a 7-7 deadlock at halftime before North took the lead for good when Joe Webb scored on an 11-yard run. North put the game away later in the second half when Jeremy Rake caught a 78-yard touchdown pass from James Blackburn, and Webb broke loose for a 54-yard TD run.

Webb finished the game with 120 yards on 10 carries.

The Northstars will hit the road this Friday when they play at Brookfield East. East smashed host Grafton last Friday, 42-7. Senior quarterback Jon Lehman threw for touchdown passes of 17, 23 and 7 yards to senior C.J. Gregg.

Waukesha South 34, Nicolet 28 (OT)

The Blackshirts needed overtime to defeat pesky Nicolet last Friday night. Defensive back Ricky Martino deflected a fourth-down pass by Nicolet in the extra period to clinch the victory.

South got possession of the ball first in overtime and scored when senior Mike Lewis scored on a 1-yard run. Kyler Tolefree set up that score with a 15-yard run that put the ball at the 1-yard line.

South fumbled four times in the second half, losing three of those. Those errors allowed Nicolet to outscore South, 15-0, in the fourth quarter.

Junior Corey Broussard of South rushed for 184 yards on 21 attempts.

South will play at Racine Case on Friday. Case lost to Brookfield Central last Friday, 28-13.
