Expect much the same from Catholic Memorial girls soccer team

Crusaders seek ninth state championship, Waukesha soccer again strong

April 2, 2013

Award-winning soccer coach John Burke has a lucky number when he considers the number of players returning to this year's Waukesha Catholic Memorial girls soccer team.

That number is 19.

The Crusaders, poised for yet another run toward the WIAA Division 2 state championship, are loaded again and then some with 19 returning letterwinners. They shut out their opponents 21 times and return two goalies, sophomore Cassidy Lentz and senior Haley Anderson, among the boatload of returnees.

Three others back were nothing less than sensational last year, getting first-team all-Classic 8 Conference billing in 2012 - senior midfielder Carina Krausert, junior defender Tori Hodorowski and sophomore forward Nicole Piette.

Senior forward Ava Olson, junior midfielder Cristina From and senior defender Anna Jurken were all named second-team performers in the Classic 8, where the Crusaders went 5-1-1, losing only to undefeated Waukesha West.

Other returning seniors include forward Julie Fischer, defender Shannon Weas, forward Katie Hampel and midfielder Courtney Farley.

Juniors with the above mentioned with varsity experience at CMH are forward Erin Chiappetta, forward Sophie See and midfielder Jessica Hyde.

Sophomore forward Emily Ott, joins fellow sophomores midfielder/defender Haley Lange, forward Kerri Jo Mark and defender Rachel Mlsna.

Forward Jo Rolli, midfielder/defender Kelsey O'Brien, defender Alex Brittain, defender Aeleesa Medina, forward Emily Cervantes and midfielder/forward Maureen Burke will begin their soccer careers. Riley Christensen is the team's freshman manager.

The Crusaders will be looking for their ninth state title in June. Right now, the team finds itself on its annual trip south, facing off with teams from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia before coming home for a tune up April 9 against Brookfield Academy.

The Classic 8 schedule begins to unfold as CMH opens at Mukwonago on April 11.

"The conference should be very competitive again," John Burke added.

West on own streak

Waukesha West, riding a streak of six straight appearances at the Division 1 state meet, will return as reigning conference champs in the Classic 8. The 2011 state finalist finished 19-5-0 last year, with a loss in the state quarterfinal. This will be coach David Zindler's 20th season at the helm.

Juniors Katie Grall (forward) and Carly Hoffman (defender) both earned first-team accolades last year. Senior Carly Richter was named honorable mention at midfield. With 21 goals, Grall was the conference's second-leading scorer last year.

The team will be without midfielder Michelle Farrow, who was injured during the basketball season.

Krahn leads North

Waukesha North junior Aubrey Krahn, by far the leading scorer in the conference last year with 73 points, returns for a junior season after earning first-team All Conference honors last spring.

Juniors Jenna Schiewer (defender) and Emily Senger (goalie) are also due back after finishing as second-team selections. Senger was second in the conference in total saves last year.

North finished third in the conference at 4-2-1, with an 18-5-1 overall record, and the Northstars will be a major player this time around.

Lesperance back

Waukesha South junior midfielder Marie Lesperance earned first-team accolades last spring, as well. South finished 10-9-4 overall last year and 1-6 in league play.
