Waukesha teams, athletes did well
Local high schools earn series of state championsips
With the passing of another year and decade, it's time to reflect back on the success stories of 2009 for the Waukesha area high school sports teams and individuals and take a look at some highlights for Waukesha North, Waukesha South, Waukesha West and Catholic Memorial:
• Freshman Emily Joers, who played for the combined Waukesha girls golf team, captured the state individual championship last fall at University Ridge in Madison. Joers, who attends Waukesha West, shot rounds of 79-71 to capture the title. Her second-day round of 1-under-par allowed her to rally from a four-stroke deficit after the first 18 holes. It was one of the biggest comebacks in state history.
• Memorial's John Luterbach shared the fall individual spotlight with Joers by winning the WIAA Division 2 state boys cross country title in Wisconsin Rapids. The CMH senior won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:46.2. He defeated runner-up Peter Drews of Shorewood by a comfortable nine seconds. Luterbach was third in 2008.
• Luterbach also won both his specialties at the state track meet in La Crosse in June. He won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:21.68 and the 3,200 with a clocking of 9:35.54. He won the 1,600 by one-tenth of a second and the 3,200 by four seconds. He was the only double winner of all Waukesha County athletes.
• Waukesha North's DJ Tate also grabbed some WIAA state track and field gold. Tate won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.47. He won the crown by just over one-tenth of a second.
• Catholic Memorial's girls volleyball team took top team honors for the year by winning the WIAA Division 2 state championship. It was the second state title in school history for the Crusaders. CMH swept Xavier in the finals, 25-18, 25-14, 25-17.
• Girls soccer was a good sport for the Waukesha teams last spring. The West girls took second place at the state tournament, losing in the Division 1 title game to Divine Savior Holy Angels, 4-0. The CMH girls also advanced to the Division 2 championship contest, falling to Edgewood by a narrow 1-0 score.
• The CMH boys soccer team also made the state-title game this fall in Milwaukee. The Crusaders fell to Fox Valley Lutheran in the Division 2 championship game, 1-0, in overtime.
• The Waukesha West football team, coached by Steve Rux, ran the table in the tough Classic 8 Conference, upsetting powerhouse Arrowhead and winning the league title with a perfect 7-0 mark, the first undefeated league record in school history. West finished the season with a school-best 10-1 record, losing to Arrowhead in the second round of the WIAA playoffs at Waukesha South.
