Condit, Memorial make another state voyage

CMH headed to fifth straight state

June 15, 2010 | 0 comments

Pewaukee's plan was simple, but far from easy to execute Thursday against Waukesha Catholic Memorial's powerful girls soccer team. Keep the ball away from Nikki Condit as much as possible.

It didn't work, and CMH sped away with a 6-0 win in the WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal.

"We did for about 20 minutes, but they are a very, very good team that's well-coached, and once they figured out what we were trying to do, they made adjustments and got the ball to her in different ways," said Pewaukee coach Rick Kocchi.

"After a while it seemed like they had about 12 Condits on the field at the same time."

Nikki Condit scored the first goal for the Crusaders in the 19th minute. Her next two goals in the first half put the No. 1 ranked team in the state in charge at the half, 3-0. Natalie Lechner scored in the second half before Condit tallied again in the 51st minute.

Catholic Memorial capped scoring with the sixth goal from Julie Fischer in the 62nd minute.

Val Gonyo, Fischer, Ava Olson, Ellen Chamberlain and Karly Lentz had assists for the Crusaders (21-2-2 overall).

Two days later, Milwaukee Lutheran provided little to no resistance in another 6-0 CMH victory, which clinched a berth in the state tournament. The Crusaders play in the state semifinals Friday with a 2 p.m. meeting against Xavier (14-6-1).

Lechner had three goals, and Condit had four assists, while senior Amy Bennett added two goals in the win over Lutheran. The Crusaders have not permitted a goal during the postseason, outscoring foes by a 36-0 count, and will make a fifth straight appearacnce at the state meet.

After state titles in 2004, 2006 and 2007, the Crusaders have fallen in the state-title game each of the past two seasons. Should this year's installment reach the final game, either Madison Edgewood (18-8-1) or Grafton (18-5-1) will await.
