Crusaders leave no doubt
Memorial soccer adds state title to overflowing trophy case
Waukesha Catholic Memorial stood tallest again in soccer. The Crusaders did what was expected of them, winning the WIAA Division 2 girls soccer tournament, stopping Grafton on Saturday in the championship game, 1-0.
Junior Valerie Gonyo scored the goal for the Crusaders, which outscored its opponents 43-1 in six playoff matches. Gonyo's goal occurred in the 56th minute at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
Freshman forward Julie Fischer just missed another scoring opportunity, and Nikki Condit had a close call on a header chance against Grafton.
Catholic Memorial's girls soccer team finished 23-2-2 overall, having won three of the last five Division 2 state titles (2006, 2007, 2010) and finishing runner-up the other two seasons. The Crusaders didn't lose a match to any team from Wisconsin this season.

Condit scored twice as the Crusaders took a 4-0 halftime lead in the state semifinal, just the latest in a string of dominant performances during the playoff ladder.
Amy Bennett, Fischer, Colleen Wimmer and Natalie Lechner added the remaining tallies. Assists came from Ava Olson, Condit, Sophia Rodriguez and Karly Lentz. Goalies Monica Gonyo and Greta Davis conspired for five saves.
Bennett opened the scoring at the 2:35 mark, and Codit followed with her first score at the 5:00 mark.
Memorial scored no fewer than six goals in any of the five playoff games before the state final.
