NBC, 8 ET/PT

Viola Davis is back for a third season of ABC's 'How to Get Away With Murder.'

NBC seems to have high hopes that this amiable sitcom will break out in its second season, which starts with a reasonably funny outing built around the employees' efforts to get the just-fired Glenn (Mark McKinney) rehired. There’s a lot to like here, starting with a confident star turn from America Ferrera, but if Superstore is going to fulfill those NBC hopes, it’s going to have to find its way past “amiable” and “reasonably funny.”

Grey’s Anatomy
ABC, 8 ET/PT

New isn’t everything, you know. Grey’s finished last season as ABC’s highest-rated drama — a remarkable showing for a series about to enter its 13th. Granted, its rise to the network’s ratings peak was greatly aided by the collapse of Scandal' and How to Get Away with Murder’, but these days simply holding steady is a near-impossible feat well worth celebrating. So celebrate Thursday as the show returns, as Bailey tries to figure out how one of her own doctors landed in the emergency room.

Speaking of that murderous ratings slide, Murder returns from its disastrous second season hoping to recapture some of the bat-crazy magic of the first. Here’s one idea: You have a fabulous actor and star in Viola Davis. This season, try letting her do more than cry and drink.
