Girl Scout cookie cereal: Coming to a breakfast table near you

Girls Scouts are known for the cookies. Now they may be known for breakfast cereal.

General Mills confirmed Monday that it is planning to launch two cereals themed around Girl Scout cookies.

"The Girl Scouts Cookie cereals will be available nationwide in January," says Mike Siemienas, a General Mills spokesman. "We will provide additional information when we are closer to the launch."

So far, there are two flavors. One is Thin Mints, a cereal that is sure to taste like one of the Girl Scouts' biggest cookie hits — those chocolate wafers of the same name with a zing of spearmint. The other is a Caramel Crunch, which appears to have some of the taste of what the Caramel deLites cookies, also known as Samoas. The boxes carry the Girl Scouts logo.

As marketing ideas go, General Mills might score with its Girl Scout cookie cereals. The cookie campaign, a key way that the organization raises funds, is a fixture in offices across the U.S. But don't expect the cereals to stick around forever. They are labeled "limited edition," meaning they disappear when cookie sales go on hiatus.
