Criminal charges are pending against a 26-year-old Waukesha man who allegedly attempted to rob Lares Fashion and Western Wear downtown on Monday afternoon, Jan. 16, police said.

According to a department news release, the man walked into the store, 245 W. Main St., around 3:07 p.m. and demanded money, then passed a clerk a note asking if the demand was understood.

The clerk refused to give any money to the man, who eventually left the store without incident, police said.

The man was arrested minutes later – also without incident – by officers who responded to the report of an attempted robbery at Lares.

They found the man, who matched the description of the suspect, and took him into custody.

No attempted robbery charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning, Jan. 17, according to online court records.

Lares Fashion was the site of a pair of armed robberies in summer 2014. Last year, owner Ireneo Lares announced the site was up for sale.
