What a difference a year makes for Amanda Medina-Roddy.

Last year, Medina-Roddy fell just short of earning a Waukesha School Board seat after finishing fourth of six candidates.

Not this year. Medina-Roddy, a mother of three, ran once again for a seat on the nine-person school board and came out on top in the five-person field Tuesday night. She received 11,924 votes or 22.8 percent of the vote.

Longtime school board member William Baumgart and newcomer Greg Deets finished second and third, respectively, to capture the other two seats in the at-large election.

Baumgart, who has been on the school board since 1995, garnered 11,503 votes (22 percent).

Deets, a special education teacher at Eagle Elementary School in the Palmyra-Eagle School District and a former elementary school principal in the Waukesha School District, received 10,181 votes (19.5 percent).

The other incumbent on the ballot, Ellen Langill, has been voted off the school board after finishing fourth place. Langill had 18.2 percent of the vote.

Langill, a history professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, has been on the school board since 2002.

Gretchen Budde, a mother of three and a parent at Bethesda Elementary School, finished fifth with 16.7 percent of the vote.

A seat was open with Steve Edlund not seeking re-election.

Leading up to the election, Medina-Roddy said she will encourage strong programs and curriculum that create college and/or career ready individuals.

And as a parent of a child who attends Hawthorne Elementary, a school where its parent-teacher organization president was recently charged with stealing money from the organization, Medina-Roddy said she would recommend a policy be enacted so a situation like that doesn't occur again.

"Given this past year, I recommend a policy such as a partnership between (the district and the PTO) may be established when the PTO agrees to conducting an annual audit and a copy (be) given to the district's chief financial officer and parents for accountability," she said.
