Small propane tanks

pose potential hazard

Waukesha County residents are asked not to place used small propane cylinders in the curbside recycling containers.

Over the last year, workers at the Waukesha County/City of Milwaukee Materials Recycling Facility have removed an average of 75 cylinders daily from the recyclables.

Propane cylinders pose a serious risk to workers and equipment because during the baling process, materials are compressed under hundreds of pounds of pressure in order to form large bales for shipping. Even when the cylinders are empty, they remain pressurized and can explode and cause a fire when compacted.

Manufacturers recommend consumers return unusable propane tanks to a local distributor. Local scrap metal collections or home improvement stores will also accept them for recycling.

Visit to find local dealers who will safely dispose of used or unwanted propane tanks.
