January is National Radon Action Month, and Waukesha County health officials are encouraging homeowners to check their home's radon levels. Exposure to radioactive radon gas is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers nationwide, according to a news release from the county.

Radon is an odorless radioactive gas that is naturally present in the ground and can enter homes through their foundations.

Radon test kits are available through many local home supply stores, through the The Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use – Environmental Health Division by calling 262-896-8300 or through local public health agencies.
