Mom's wish is to take her family to Disney World
The Meadowbrook Elementary School community has rallied around the family of a kindergarten student through a fundraiser that will enable the girl's cancer-stricken mother to take a family trip to Disney World.
The fundraising effort has collectively raised more than $34,000 through a Feb. 3 dinner, raffle and silent auction at the school, as well as a GoFundMe page and private donations on behalf of the Jerdon family.
According to a statement from the Waukesha School District, Laina Jerdon, the mother of 5-year-old Kysa Jerdon, has aggressive tumors on her brain and lungs.
The district said it has been Laina's dream to take a family vacation to Disney World with her husband, Todd and youngest daughter Matea, 3. Laina has visited Disney World before, but she wanted to share the experience with her daughters. She had set a goal to save for a trip sometime in 2018, but with the news of her medical condition, she had hoped to take the trip sooner.
Her cancer diagnosis became known in December, the second time she has had to fight cancer in her life.
An event press release said Laina was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2014. She had an aggressive and successful treatment undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation to leave her considered cancer-free by July 2014.
But in December 2016, an intermittent headache and waves of nausea sent Laina to urgent care, where, due to her medical history, the team ran a CT scan of her brain and discovered tumors in her brain and her lungs.
Culver’s on Grandview Boulevard donated all the food and the cupcakes were donated by Sarah Geist for the Feb. 3 fundraiser dinner, attended by between 250 and 300 guests.
The Go Fund Me fundraiser, titled "Jerdon Disney Dream," is still active and has already doubled its initial $11,000 goal. As of Feb. 27, the total had climbed to $26,375, according to the website at www.gofundme.com/jerdon-disney-dream. Donations can be made through that web page.
