In its annual awards ceremony honoring "peace builders" from outside the organization, Plowshare will also recognize one of its own, Sally Michalko, who died in November.
The former Plowshare director will be honored for her devotion to her work during Plowshare Fair Trade Marketplace’s fourth annual Kate Delaney Jolin Peacebuilder Award celebration on Friday, March 10. The awards ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a special recognition of Sally Jo Michalko.
“Sally was an amazing woman, and we are blessed to have had her pour her heart and soul in the work that Plowshare does," said Sara Allison, Plowshare’s director of retail and marketing. "Her infectious personality and passion for our mission will be forever missed, but we will continue to see the impact that she has made on our community for years to come.”
Two awards are presented each year: an individual award and a group award.
This year’s individual winner is Iva Richard for her involvement in Ventures in Peoples with Haiti, SOPHIA and Ascension Lutheran Church’s refugee resettlement and Mission Outreach programs.
The group winner is The Women’s Center, of Waukesha, for its mission of providing safety, shelter and support to women and their families affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and abuse, and to facilitate their development.
The first awards were presented during Plowshare’s 25th anniversary celebration. Through the years, various committees were formed within the organization. One of those committees was the Fund Development Committee, which set out to come up with ways to raise income through fundraisers while recognizing peace building work that their mission revolves around, Allison said.
One of the committee members, Kate Delaney Jolin, came up with the Peace Builder Awards idea.
Guests are welcome to arrive at 5 p.m. to join the social hour, silent auction and cash bar.
Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m., where guests can enjoy tandoori-style chicken and basmati rice, a red potato and pepper dish, eggplant style hummus and pita chips, a dry fruit platter, and dinner rolls. A tandoori-style dried fruits and couscous will be available for vegetarians.
In special memory of Michalko, one of her favorite dishes – cold Mediterranean skewers with olives, tomatoes, mozzarella and artichokes – will be served. An assortment of desserts, including baklava, bars, brownies, and cheesecake, will top off the meal.
