COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A motorcycle officer was seriously injured Saturday morning after he was involved in a crash while escorting Vice President Mike Pence’s motorcade in Colorado.

Colorado Springs Police say the officer’s injury was “absolutely” an accident and not caused by deliberate action on anyone’s part. What caused the 7:30 a.m. crash remains under investigation.

Police say the motorcade was headed to the airport.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was transported to a hospital. Police say he is in serious but stable condition.

Pence said via Twitter he spoke to the officer's wife.

"So relieved his injuries not life threatening," he said. "Keep him in your thoughts/prayers."

Pence was in Colorado Springs to visit Focus on the Family, meet with Air Force officials and attend a reception for Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo.
