Player to Watch:

Jaylen Campbell. The playmaking All-State linebacker is dangerous on both sides of the ball, serving as the second-leading rusher on the team behind another returnee, Josh Karfonta. The front-line assets back on defense make this team a favorite to win the Classic 8, even immersed in a league with larger schools that have state-title potential.

Keep an eye on: CJ Goetz. The linebacker probably merited better accolades than just second-team All Conference as a sophomore last year. He stands 6-3, 220 pounds and figures to have a breakout year as the Crusaders’ inside linebacker. By the end of the year, we think most everyone in the area will know the name.

We say: Perhaps it seems silly to pick against Arrowhead or Waukesha West when considering the Classic 8 Conference favorite, but we’ll go ahead and label Catholic Memorial as the team to beat. The players back are front-line talents, even if the squad must figure out how to replace talented quarterback Alex Bray (a competition between Tony Wojnowski and Ben Nimz). Last year’s title game was almost in hand before a heartbreaking loss, and this year’s team might be even better.
