Waukesha tennis players and golfers spent the early part of the week preparing for or playing in the WIAA Division 1 state championships.

Rina Niehoff of Waukesha South will cap her senior year with a trip to the state meet, battling against Kat Heineman of Middleton (17-11) in the opening round. Niehoff (25-8) took second at the Homestead sectional to automatically qualify.
Teammates Carley Schreiber and Jaeda Walsh won their opening match at No. 1 doubles to also advance. With a 23-9 record, the duo will face Laura Nicholas and Hoi Ming Lee McVey of Madison West (16-6) in the opening round.

In Division 2, Catholic Memorial will send top doubles team Catherine Raster and Kate Mrochinski (20-6) with the No. 3 seed, and they'll play Friday after a first-round bye. Teammates Kelsey Taugher and Margaret Diedrich (21-5) play Thursday against Elise Curtin and Stephanie Sowin of Xavier (22-7).

The state meet begins Thursday.

In golf, Jessica Kuzniewski shot a round of 77 on the first day of the state golf meet Monday at University Ridge in Madison, tied for ninth place with another round scheduled for Tuesday. Sydney Brandt of Catholic Memorial shot 84 on the first day, good for 15th.
