The Oconomowoc football team won its first 11 games last year and brought back a number of key pieces, so for the Raccoons to start out 5-0 is no surprise. But the manner in which those games have been won easily makes for the most entertaining ride in the state.

Last week, OHS survived against Beaver Dam in overtime, the second OT victory of the year in Wisconsin Little Ten play. The Beavers missed a late field goal and had another blocked, and Oconomowoc won on a Jacob Rams touchdown.

The week before, Oconomowoc was down two scores on two occasions and rallied for a 50-40 win.

And the week before that, Oconomowoc won over Hartford in overtime, 48-42, on a Christian Gurule touchdown after the defense buckled down for a stop.

In the nonconference season, Oconomowoc eased past Waukesha South (but did trail early) and survived a wild win over Kettle Moraine, 42-35, in a game split over two days because of a lightning delay. The Lasers led by two scores in that game, as well.

Surely there's a dose of bend-but-not-break defense and a healthy dose of luck involved, but Oconomowoc's offense has been flat-out spectacular, led by the quarterback-receiving combo of Ben Nienhuis and Zach Clayton, but also picking up big time contributions from guys like Rams (when healthy) and Gurule. The Raccoons are through the thick of the league schedule and will be favored to win over three of its final four opponents for sure, with an intriguing battle at home against Wisconsin Lutheran awaiting in Week 8.
