The Waukesha West girls track and field team took second place at the Classic 8 Conference outdoor meet May 12, an event dominated by host Arrowhead, which scored a record 225.5 points to win.

West's 101 points edged out Kettle Moraine (98.5) for second. Waukesha South took fifth, Waukesha North sixth and Catholic Memorial eighth.

West won only one event, with Kristen Heckel topping the field in the 300-meter hurdles (46.74). Kaitlyn Hastings took home a title for Catholic Memorial with her first-place run of 16.09 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.

Catholic Memorial also won the 4x100-meter relay, with Hastings anchoring the team of Mara Aparnieks, Emily Kern and Maddy Davis (50.86).

Natalie Gottschalk won the high jump for South with a clear of 4-10.

Jenna McMiller of North closed her Classic 8 career by winning the 1,600 meters in 5:10.33, with teammate Sammi Donovan by her side in second place (5:10.62).

Leah Quadracci of South won the wheelchair shot put.

4x100 sets new mark

Waukesha South posted the top finish of the area boys teams, taking fourth place with 78 points. West (73), Catholic Memorial (61) and North (60) followed suit, while Arrowhead (186) took the top spot.

South's 4x100-meter relay unit posted the best time of the field, winning in 43.39 seconds to set a new meet record.

Montrell Gricce, Tyler Naumowicz, Kyler Tolefree and Cory Broussard won by two-tenths of a second over Arrowhead. The standard ranks seventh in the state thus far in 2011.

West's Matt Losiniecki won both throws events, taking first place in the shot put at 56 feet, 7 inches and first in the discus at 170-03.

Broussard, one of the state's top runners in the 100-meter dash, also won that event in 11.09 seconds.

Waukesha South won an additional relay crown in the 4x800, with Justin Washington, DQ Smith, Derrick Rendon and Ricardo Contreras winning in 8:14.13.

Catholic Memorial claimed its own relay victory with a first-place time of 3:22.03 in the 4x400 meters by Broc Kocour, Kyle Deneen, Don Kennedy and Sam Tiahnybik.

Patrick Llanas of North had the best Northstars finish, taking first in the open 400 at 49.67 seconds.
