It’s back to the Tony Romo Emergency Plan for the Dallas Cowboys.

“Over the next few days, we’ll see what our options are,” Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ chief operating officer, told USA TODAY Sports. “Figure out what’s next. Right now, we don’t have enough information.”

Although some reports say Romo will miss 6 to 10 weeks with a fractured vertebrae, leaving the Cowboys to open the season with rookie Dak Prescott as the starting quarterback, Jones maintains that it’s too soon to declare a timetable for Romo’s return.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett has even termed Romo’s condition as “day to day.”

Jones, though, says the next few days will allow for further evaluation that could provide an indication of how Romo responds to treatment.

“It’s a work in progress,” Jones said.

While Prescott has sparkled in preseason, Jones admits, “We know that’s not the regular season.”

Still, Prescott was part of the emergency plan when the Cowboys chose him out of Mississippi State with a fourth-round pick, hoping to develop him for the long term. Now that plan is accelerated.

Jones said the Cowboys are also pleased with the progress of first-year quarterback Jameill Showers, yet they are looking to add a veteran to the mix. Earlier this summer, the Cowboys talked to the Cleveland Browns about acquiring Josh McCown. Those talks could heat up in the coming days, when the Cowboys will be actively working the market and perhaps competing for released players.

Said Jones, “Obviously, we’re looking.”
