Darrelle Revis non-committal about staying with Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD – No help was coming.

Darrelle Revis knew this, finding himself alone in one-on-one coverage. There was no safety behind him, not with Todd Bowles sending a six-man blitz with the game at stake.

Tom Brady knew it too, and was coming right at his former teammate yet again.

And the $17 million man, the Jets’ All-Pro cornerback, was beaten by a rookie.

Again.

Brady hit receiver Malcolm Mitchell for his second touchdown Sunday with 1:56 remaining to give the Patriots a 22-17 comeback victory in MetLife Stadium.

As this season winds its way to its painful conclusion, Revis’ struggles in many ways symbolize the disappointment and frustration of the Jets' lost 2016.

They brought back the seven-time Pro Bowler for games such as these. And once again this season, a receiver – this time with the help of Brady – got the better of the former shutdown corner.

“This time he probably attacked me a little bit more than I expected,” Revis said of Brady, who he won a Super Bowl with in New England in 2015 before he returned to New York. “But it’s football. He has to execute. I have to execute better on my end.”

That has been a common refrain for Revis this season for the Jets (3-8).

He spoke in training camp about possibly moving to safety.

Then in October, he told Newsday, “My body’s breaking down.”

And earlier this month, Revis, 31, admitted, “I’m old.”

After the game, he talked about playing for pride in the Jets’ final five games.

He was less enthusiastic about discussing his future with the Jets, at least in 2017 when he would be owed $15 million.

“It’s up to their decision,” Revis said. “Everybody has their own individual decision [to make]. … We’ll see. We’ll see how it goes.”

And does he want to be back?

“We’ll see how it goes,” he said.

Revis has been beaten week after week, often yielding too much cushion to receivers.

On Mitchell’s game-winning touchdown catch, Revis lined up five yards off the line of scrimmage. Originally covering Julian Edelman in the slot, he switched to Mitchell when both Patriots receivers on the left side ran out-routes against the Jets blitz.

Revis arrived too late.

“We have to protect the inside,” Revis said. “There’s no safety on the field. I protected inside, and they ran an out-route. …

“That’s the weak spot in the defense, is the out-routes. That’s what you want them to throw. But when the end zone line is right there… it’s definitely something where you have to be aware of.”

Revis was beaten by Edelman for a 24-yard reception earlier in the game-winning drive.

And Mitchell beat him on a 4-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Revis appeared to hesitate when Brady fumbled the snap.

“Trying to get through traffic, especially on a crossing route down there is very tough,” Revis said. “I had to dodge a few people. But at the same time, quarterbacks know when it’s a blitz down there, they kind of tend to back up and try to lob it. And he lobbed it.”

Mitchell complimented the cornerback as a “phenomenal player. A Hall of Famer.”

So did Brady, who also noted that Revis “played over a little bit” to the inside on the game-winning touchdown, creating room for Mitchell’s out-route.

“He’s a great player," Brady said. “He’s been a great player for a long time, so I have a lot of respect for him and what his abilities are. I thought he played really well.”

Rookie Malcolm Mitchell got the better of Darrelle Revis on the game-winning touchdown, an 8-yard pass from Tom Brady.
