Waukesha County Genealogical Society to meet on May 28

On May 28th the Waukesha County Genealogical Society will host an evening with Jovanka Ristic. She will tell us about the tremendous map collection found in our own backyard! The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Library houses one of North America’s foremost geography and map collections. Formerly the library of the American Geographical Society (AGS) of New York, it was transferred to Milwaukee in 1978 following a nationwide selection process by the Society. Learn about this library’s history, the different types of materials it contains, and how its maps, atlases, and other resources can help you with your genealogical research. The presenter, a reference librarian with over 30 years of experience in the AGS Library, will help you learn how to put your ancestors “on the map.”

Jovanka Ristić is a Senior Academic Librarian at the American Geographical Society (AGS) Library, a special collection within the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries. A native of Milwaukee, WI, she has degrees in biology (B.S., M.S.) and library science (M.L.S.), all from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. With more than thirty years of experience as a reference librarian in the AGS Library, she has a thorough knowledge of the maps, atlases, books, and reference works available. A first-generation American herself, Ms. Ristić is fluent in German, has some knowledge of French and Serbo-Croatian, and has studied Polish to help in her reference work. Her knowledge of maps and geography has been enhanced by extensive travel in Europe. Her background and training make her especially well qualified to assist the many genealogists who visit, call, or write to the AGS Library with map-related questions. Ms. Ristić has made numerous presentations about the AGS Library and its resources to genealogical groups in the Milwaukee area and throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois, as well as at national genealogical conferences.

Meeting time 7:00 P.M. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 300 Carroll St., Waukesha (parking lot adjoins the Waukesha Public Library).
