As unemployment reaches new highs, many turn to starting own business

June 30, 2009 | 0 comments

Local entrepreneur offers answers to economic concerns

Last week, unemployment numbers rose once again, surprising economists, who thought we would actually see a drop. And although it seems like we’ve reached a turning point in our recession, these new unemployment numbers (over 10% in some states) indicate the economy… and, especially, finding a job, will remain a concern for some time.

Nowadays, in many cases, joblessness is not a choice; it is a consequence. Company lay-offs coupled with job unavailability have caused the unemployment rate to reach this new level. As a result, individuals have had to look within for the answers to their problems. Many of them have either started, or are considering starting their own business. Because they need to do this without spending a lot of money, or taking a lot of risk, most of the businesses people are starting are home-based.

Although this may still seem risky, for the once-unemployed, it’s liberating to be able to work again. While entrepreneurship comes with its own special set of questions and concerns, many people feel the benefits far outweigh them. Being your own boss guarantees never being fired or laid off!

Like many others, Sarah Schueler, a Waukesha entrepreneur with her own scrapbooking and paper crafts business, has seen firsthand how people in her community have suffered because of the economic situation. Sarah not only runs her own business, though. She also helps others who want to start businesses like hers.

Whatever type of business you’d like to start, Sarah has this advice:

“Don’t be afraid to take a chance on yourself. Much of my business is due to effective time management, social networking, wise investing in the business itself and hard work. But, without belief in myself, I wouldn’t have had the courage to take a step of faith.”

Anyone who would like to learn more about starting their own scrapbooking and paper crafts business should feel free to contact Sarah at stampwithsarah@wi.rr.com.
