City of Waukesha Switches to Alternate Week Recycling Collection

Jan. 25, 2010 | 0 comments

Waukesha (WI) – January 25, 2010 - Beginning the week of January 18, 2010, pickup of recyclables by the City’s residential hauler will be done on alternate weeks. The pickup day of the week stays the same.

Facing budget restraints, the City negotiated with Veolia Environmental Services to change the collection schedule for recyclable materials from weekly to alternate week collection to save tax dollars.

Residents can determine their collection route (marked Blue or Yellow) by viewing the map on the recycling page of the City’s website www.ci.waukesha.wi.us or by calling City Engineering at (262) 524-3600. The 2010 calendar on the website shows the collection schedule for blue and the yellow routes. The Blue Route receives collection the week of January 18, and every other week thereafter. The Yellow Route will have collection the week of January 25, then every other week thereafter. Flyers with maps and calendars were distributed in recycling bins left at the curb during January.

Residents are encouraged to get a second blue bin free at the City Hall Annex at 130 Delafield Street, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or at the Drop-off Center, 750 Sentry Drive from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays to help with storage of recyclables over an additional week’s time. Alternatively, for occasional overflow, residents may use a cardboard box marked RECYCLE in addition to their blue bin. If residents throw recyclables into the trash, that will increase landfill costs and decrease the revenue that would have been paid for the sale of recyclables.

Mayor Larry Nelson commented that residents are encouraged to continue to save all their recyclables in order to achieve the cost savings. “The City receives a rebate check from the County based on the tons recycled each year; therefore, residents are reminded that the more you recycle the more dollars you save!”
