Hoa Aloha Austism Awareness Bowling Event

March 10, 2010 | 0 comments

Good Friend, Inc. — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating

autism awareness, teaching acceptance of differences, and fostering empathy for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among their typically-developing peers — is hosting its second annual Hoa Aloha Autism Awareness Bowling Event on Sunday, April 18, from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., at Sunset Bowl Entertainment Center, 333 W. Sunset Dr., Waukesha. Teams have the option of choosing their start time: 11:30 a.m. or 1:45 p.m.

The family-friendly gathering features prizes in a number of categories, including a Hawai-

ian costume contest. There will also be a professional photographer onsite who will be taking pictures of participants for same-day delivery. Spectators are welcome, particularly to support the mission through the open-to-the-public bake sale.

Teams of 4-6 bowlers, age 3 and older, can request a team registration form from Good

Friend, Inc., by contacting Denise Schamens (262-391-1369, denise@goodfriendinc.com), or can register online at www.goodfriendinc.com/alohaInfo.html. Space is limited, so team captains are encouraged to complete and submit their registrations at their earliest convenience.

For a $100 registration fee, which can be sponsored by a business, team members each get two games of bowling, shoe rental, and snacks and beverages.

Event ($500) and team ($100) sponsorships are still available. Contact Chelsea Budde (414-510-0385, chelsea@goodfriendinc.com) for more information.

Autism is a neuro-biological disorder which affects all planes of development to varying

degrees. Now diagnosed at a rate of 1:110 children in the U.S. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009), ASD is prevalent in the school setting. Good Friend’s services for students and professionals explain ASD in age-appropriate, user-friendly terminology using positive, interactive tools to help others “step in the shoes” of someone with autism.

April is National Autism Awareness Month, and April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day.
