Women Sang the Blues and Broke Barriers
WAUKESHA – University of Wisconsin-Waukesha assistant professor of history, Tim Thering will speak on Monday, March 15, on “Women in the Blues.” The presentation, part of the campus’ celebration of Women’s History Month, will be at noon in the Commons Room 101 on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha. The public is welcome at no charge.
Thering will explore the lyrics of songs sung by women blues vocalists of the 1920s and 1930s, focusing especially on the songs of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. These female artists boldly addressed topics in public that most Americans believed were taboo, particularly for women, he says. He will play excerpts from selected songs and show how these proud women fearlessly sang out about female sexual desire, domestic violence, and lesbianism.
The lecture is sponsored by the UW-Waukesha student African American Union (AAU) and support by the campus LGBTQS Pride Alliance.
