Learning From Black Thursday at UW-Waukesha

Learning from Black Thursday is a noon hour program that features a panel of UW Waukesha students discussing campus diversity and climate issues in a lively format that addresses key questions and invites audience participation. The student panelist includes Trinicha Hussain, Jasmine Sims, Chance Zombor, Jenny Jones, Alexander Giencke, Brandi Johnson, Antwain Barfield, Anthony Llewellyn, and LaShondra Graves. These students will be asked a series of questions including ones such as; how would you define diversity? Have you ever used the diversity center? What has the diversity center or membership in students clubs such as, AAU (African American Union) for the members, meant to you?

The program will take place in our library, currently hosting the highly acclaimed and powerful exhibit “Black Thursday at Oshkosh: Race, Politics and Campus Unrest.” A reception in honor of our student panelists and exhibit curator UW Oshkosh Associate Professor of History, Stephen Kercher will be part of the program. Stephen Kercher will be here for the program.

Timothy Thering, History Professor, Margaret Rozga, English Professor, James Jordan, Director of the Diversity center, and Amy Walker, School Counselor put together this special event to get a chance to hear the voices of their students. This event will not only give the students a chance to talk and say how they feel, but it will also give other students who are not part of the student panel a chance to express their feelings and or think about the matters in hand. What is diversity and what does it mean to you is the questions you should ask yourself. These are the questions that are fueling this powerful discussion.

This event is not only open to the UW-Waukesha students, but it is also open to the public as well. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. The event will be help on W, February 24th 2010 at UW-Waukesha’s Library, noon, located at 1500 N. University Dr. Waukesha, WI 53188. For more information please call the UW-Waukesha Diversity Center at 262-521-5502.
